Dystopia in New York

ELISAVA Design Degree Project

Dystopia in New York is a personal interpretation of Constant's proposal in New Babylon, an architectural project for a future society. Constant created a series of plans and prototypes for possible utopian cities that rose above those we know.

A nomadic city, New Babylon, consisted of an extensive network of interior spaces of various levels that would spread to eventually cover the planet. These interconnected spaces, called sectors, would have multiple floors with transparent floors, suspended in the air by tall columns of varying design. Vehicles were concentrated on the first level, and air traffic landed on the rooftops, while inhabitants dispersed on foot through labyrinthine interiors, with environments continuously reconstructed. Every aspect of the environment could be controlled and reconfigured spontaneously. It was a playful city where the neo-Babylonians would be free to create and recreate the city to their liking.
